Purple red bud1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() The pea-sized blossoms of the eastern redbud emerge in early spring before the leaves arrive, covering the bare branches in garlands of pink. Soil: Tolerates acidic or alkaline soils as well as heavy clays. The horizontal branching pattern adds architectural interest to the garden and makes an attractive canopy for spring bulbs. Because of their modest size, redbuds work well as understory trees and are particularly stunning when planted in groupings. This tree is not picky when it comes to soil preference, but it does best when grown in a moist, well-drained location. The eastern redbud ( Cercis canadensis) grows throughout most of the eastern U.S, extending as far west as Oklahoma and Texas and north into Canada. The redbud adapts to a wide range of site conditions and thrives in most types of soil and levels of sun exposure. The flowers also give rise to clusters of beanlike pods that remain on the tree into winter. Heart-shaped leaves 2 to 6 inches in length emerge a reddish color, turning dark green in summer and then a bright canary yellow in autumn. The trunk of the redbud commonly divides close to the ground, creating an interesting multi-trunk shape with graceful arched branches and a rounded crown. The buds appear to emerge right from the bark of twigs and branches and even on parts of the trunk, adorning the entire tree with miniature clusters of flowers.Clusters of tiny magenta buds swell into showy rosy pink flowers in early spring before the leaves appear, with the long-lasting blossoms putting on a show for two to three weeks. These attributes, along with the redbud’s compact size and resilient nature, have made it one of the most popular small trees for residential gardens. Photo by: Saxon Holt.Īs I returned to observe these trees throughout the year, I discovered that their beauty extends well beyond the spring season, as the fading flowers give way to heart-shaped green to bronze leaves in summer and brown pods that remain on the tree after the leaves fall. The horizontal branching pattern of the redbud adds architectural interest and makes an attractive canopy for spring bulbs. ![]()

Average number of prenatal visits1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Micronutrient supplementation has been found to have benefit for babies, especially in developing countries. Screening activities such as genetic counseling and testing, ABO and Rh blood typing, and screening for anemia and for neural tube defects and aneuploidy can prevent or mitigate adverse birth outcomes. Routine checks including fetal heart auscultation, urinalysis, assessment of maternal weight, blood pressure, and fundal height allow close monitoring of fetal development and reduce birth risk factors. The expected benefits of prenatal care visits depend very much on the contents of prenatal care. Prenatal care has many dimensions, including the time of the initial visit, the number and spacing of visits, the services provided in each visit, the type of provider and provider setting, the assessment of risk status, the schedule of medical screening tests, and the inclusion of specific medical, educational, nutritional, and social support services. Considerable efforts are underway, supported by WHO, the World Bank and others, to expand prenatal care in low- and middle-income countries. Prenatal care has increased significantly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in recent years, but over half of pregnant women in developing countries still do not receive the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended minimum of four visits starting early in pregnancy. Prenatal care has long been advocated to improve maternal health and birth outcomes, and together with perinatal and postpartum care, was identified as a key instrument to reach targets such as reduced child mortality as part of Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5, and continues to be a priority in the Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 3). Sick junk teen1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() In this instance, the change in smells didn’t distinguish between diseases but was instead a warning light – or smell – that someone was unwell as their immune system was active. “This was the first experimental study to show that when you’re sick, you smell differently,” Olsson said. The odors stemming from bodies that had begun to behave as if they were sick were found to smell more aversive, proving that disease smells. The odors were sniffed by a panel of 40, who described their intensity and pleasantness. Meet the dogs who can sniff out cancer better than some lab tests He loves to get into troughs of water that are left out for cattle and will retrieve his ball from the bottom a stream. ![]() Ulric, a cross between a Labrador and a golden retriever, is a bit of a water baby. Body odors were then collected from the armpits of t-shirts worn by volunteers, ready for inspection by a panel of judges whose noses were trained for the occasion. The team injected human volunteers with lipopolysaccaharide, a compound known to activate the innate immune system and inflammatory responses in humans as if they were fighting bacteria.īy injecting eight volunteers with either the compound or a placebo, bodies were made to behave either as if they were sick or healthy. “People should be able to detect when someone is contagious,” said Olsson, who sniffed out the truth in a recent study. The process is thought to be evolutionary among humans who sense the change and steer clear – to stay healthy. Olsson’s team set out on a more general challenge: to explore how odors can reveal when someone is sick, or recently infected. Preti has been studying body odor for more than 30 years.”I ride public transport a lot, and every now and then, I come across someone emanating a strong odor, and it’s obvious,” Preti said. The change is subtle, however, and more easily picked up by a trained nose, such as that of George Preti, an organic chemist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. ![]() Several diseases have been discovered to harbor signature scents on the body in recent studies, including people with typhoid fever reported to smell like baked bread, people with yellow fever smelling like a butcher’s shop and the glandular disease scrofula leaving people smelling like stale beer – subtle scents picked up most likely by a trained nose.Ī more common disease with a trademark odor is diabetes, which is described as having notes of rotten apples, caused by low concentrations of acetone released on the breath. “On average, people smell more aversive when they’re sick,” Olsson said. “Some diseases result in a characteristic odor emanating from different sources on the body of a sick individual,” said Mats Olsson, an experimental psychologist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.Ī person’s smell escapes not just from their skin but their breath, blood and urine and subtle differences reveal just how healthy they are. The smells pouring out from various parts of the body are unique to an individual, made up of select compounds that vary depending on age, diet, sex, metabolism … and health. ![]()
